Product Application

Levulinic acid has a wide range of applications. It can react as both a carboxylic acid and a ketone, undergoing processes such as esterification, halogenation, hydrogenation, oxidative dehydrogenation, and condensation to produce various products. These include resins, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, solvents, coatings, inks, rubber and plastic additives, lubricating oil additives, surfactants, and more.
In the pharmaceutical industry, calcium salts of it (calcium fructoconate) can be used to prepare intravenous injections. As a nutritional supplement, it aids in bone formation and helps maintain the normal excitability of nerves and muscles. 4-Oxovaleric acid is also used in the production of indomethacin and plant hormones.
The bisphenol acid derived from it can be used to produce water-soluble resins, which are useful in the paper industry for producing filter paper. Additionally, 4-Oxovaleric acid serves as an intermediate in the production of pesticides and dyes.

FAQ
Q: What does 4-Oxopentanoic acid do for the skin?
A: It can conditions and softens the skin. It also acts as a mild preservative with good antibacterial properties, without altering the structure or pH of other ingredients in the product. Sodium levulinate, the sodium salt of 4-Oxopentanoic acid, is most often used as a preservative, although its use is more common in food products than in cosmetics.
Q: Is it safe?
A: The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety has concluded that levulinic acid and sodium levulinate are safe for use in cosmetics when formulated to be non-irritating, according to the current practices of use and concentrations described in the safety assessment.
