After being treated with strong alkali, it undergoes Wittig reaction with various aldehydes or ketones. The resulting alkoxy or aryl alkenes are hydrolyzed to form aldehydes with one more carbon atom than the original aldehydes or ketones.

(Methoxymethyl)triphenylphosphonium chloride is mainly used in high-end liquid crystal products and pharmaceutical synthesis (such as the precursor substance of Wittig- reagent, for the methoxy methylation of carbonyl compounds, such as in the synthesis of steroids and prostatic analogues).
