What Is Tetrapropylammonium Bromide? What Is Its Main Uses?

Leave a message

Tetrapropylammonium Bromide (CAS No. 1941-30-6) chemical formula of it is C₁₂H₂₈NBr. It appears as a white crystalline powder and exhibits strong hygroscopicity, gradually deliquescing and absorbing moisture from the air. It is highly soluble in water and alcohols, which facilitates its reactivity in solution.

As a quaternary ammonium salt, tetrapropyl ammonium bromide has a structure where four propyl groups are arranged around a central nitrogen atom in a tetrahedral configuration. The bromine ion serves as the counter-ion, with ionic bonding stabilizing the central cation and forming a stable molecular structure.

It is primarily used as a molecular sieve template agent. Additionally, it is commonly employed as a phase transfer catalyst in various organic reactions, such as halogen substitution, REDOX reactions, N-alkylation, and carbene dichloride reactions.
