Polyester polyols and polyether polyols are the common types of polyol materials in the chemical industry. They have significant differences in chemical structure, performance characteristics, and application scenarios. Understanding these differences is beneficial for material selection in actual production.

Polyester polyols are produced through the condensation reaction of polybasic acids (such as adipic acid) and polyols (such as ethylene glycol). During the process, water is generated as a by-product. Polyether polyols are formed from epoxides (such as ethylene oxide, propylene oxide) using a catalyst for ring-opening polymerization. No water is produced during the production process. The molecular chains of polyester polyols contain a large number of ester groups (-COO-), which have strong polarity and strong intermolecular forces. The main chain of polyether polyols is composed of ether bonds (-O-), resulting in better flexibility and easier rotation of the molecular chains. The structural differences lead to materials made from polyester polyols having higher hardness, while polyether polyols are softer.
Polyester polyols have high-temperature resistance, with decomposition temperatures typically above 200℃. However, they are prone to hydrolysis and need to be strictly protected from moisture during storage. Polyether polyols have strong water-hydrolysis resistance and more stability in humid environments, but they are prone to oxidation and decomposition at high temperatures. The recommended long-term usage temperature should not exceed 120℃.
Polyether polyols have a lower viscosity and are liquid at room temperature, making them convenient for processing and operation. Polyester polyols have a higher viscosity and some varieties may exhibit crystallization in low-temperature environments.
